“You see, my plan is so ridiculous… so simple… that it scares you. But… if you come with me, we’ll clean up millions,” the professor said, wide-eyed on the black and white screen before them.

Lance’s bracer beeped. He looked at it. It was a communication from his father. With a sigh, the captain sat up off the ground.

“Don’t pause it,” Lance said as he stood up.

“You sure?” Justin asked.

“Yeah, it’s the lieutenant general. This could be a while,” he replied.

Exiting the room, he paused as the door shut behind him. Dexter stopped and looked at him like a deer in headlights. The soldier wore loose-fitting pajamas. Tucked under his arm was a tub of ice cream. In his other hand was a spoon.

“How’d you know it’d work?” Dexter said with a whimper. “Because it’s really helping.”

“There was a video in Michael’s favorites,” Lance replied. “Cold, sweet, dairy-based things with fats coat the capsaicin receptors, preventing them from being activated by the spice molecule. And the reason it hurts all the way through is because those receptors line you from bow to stern.”

“God bless you, sir,” Dexter muttered before waddling into his room.

Lance made his way to the elevators. As the doors opened, each S4 squad commander was inside. The Lupine team lead flashed him a smile.

“Your guy doing okay?” he asked.

“He’ll live,” Lance replied before addressing the entire moving room. “Don’t let your guys get spicy noodles on the Alcazar… it’s a real crapshoot.”

The elevator stopped; its doors opened. Being the last in, Lance was the first out. He led them through the conference corridor. Reaching the room in the communication, they all filed in one by one and took a seat around the table.

“Did you hear about the new ship they’re making?” Lance heard one of the captains ask another.

“Apparently, they’re looking for an S4 to join the SOATs,” another replied. “That’s who gets the ship.”

“I’m putting my hat in,” a third chimed in. “I want to get my hands on some of those weapons.”

“Put your gossiping to rest,” Leon’s voice boomed as he entered the room. “We’re here to discuss more pressing matters.”

Everyone shot to their feet and saluted the lieutenant general. He motioned back.

“As you were,” he said.

Leon moved to the front of the room. Activating his multi-tool, he projected an image of the galaxy onto the wall. Red dots were scattered all over the map with several clustered together around specific planets.

“These red dots are where the Reeve forces are either at or will be moving to within the next few days,” Leon explained.

“Did you already crack the encryption?” a squad commander asked.

“We did,” Leon replied.

“If I may ask, how?” Lance added, raising his hand. “No decryption software is advanced enough to unravel AI codes without being an artificial intelligence itself.”

“You’re right… unless we have a template that shows what that encryption looked like,” Leon replied. “The Reeve you brought back. Our cyber team data mined its decryption software. We weren’t expecting it to still work, but it did and as a result, we were able to break the code on that data you picked up.
